Research Highlights
Event
The multi-year negative Indian Ocean Dipole of 2021–2022

IITM explored the dynamics underlying this multi-year nIOD event. The tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) experienced predominant westerly wind anomalies from the summer of 2021 through the end of 2022, with a record number and duration of westerly wind bursts (WWBs).

Event
Quantifying the annual atmospheric CO2 burden from biomass burning and its transport time to monitoring sites

IITM has assessed biomass burning CO2 contributions and transport times using the NIES-TM model (2003–2019) with GFEDv5 and GFAS emissions across 16 biomes. Trend analysis revealed a significant decreasing trend in TSG and TSM, and an increasing trend in boreal forests (BOF).

Event
Persistence in Physical Systems: An Application to Soil Moisture Memory

Quantification of Soil Moisture Memory through a novel approach IITM has successfully quantified the Soil moisture memory (SMM) of ~35 days during the excess and deficit rainfall conditions at Pune. The Water, Weather, and Climate Research team at IITM addressed the issue of inappropriate estimates of soil moisture (SM) memory using existing methods.
